Kingfisher pilot breaks rules, flies woman in cockpit
"We will investigate the matter," Kingfisher spokesman Prakash Mirpuri said. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation too has ordered a probe and warned of strict action if the pilot is found guilty.
This incident comes at a time when the DGCA is conducting a safety audit of Kingfisher and Air India Express — airlines identified as being in severe financial distress by a DGCA audit last December.
The Kingfisher cabin crew did not press the case against the pilot on August 19 itself as the commander is one of the seniormost pilots of the airline.
In fact, the pilot, GM(training), was among the handful who also fly promoter Vijay Mallya's personal Airbus corporate jet.
Employees have always steered clear of this select group, but with salaries pending since March, the fear is diminishing. As soon as the flight landed in Mumbai, the cabin crew lodged a complaint.
Sources point out that the Kingfisher commander broke many rules while taking the woman into the cockpit, no matter that a co-pilot was present.
"Taking a flyer in the cockpit is itself not allowed. But in this case, asking the cabin crew not to come to the cockpit during the flight is another serious breach," said a source.
"DGCA rules stipulate that when one of the pilots leaves the cockpit for any reason, a crew member must remain there till the former returns. The reason is that since 9/11, the cockpit doors are locked and if for some reason the only pilot in the cockpit gets incapacitated, there must be someone else to open the door for the other pilot."

Dhanushkodi - at land's end
Barely 20 km from the town of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu,
Dhanushkodi gets its name from Dhanush (bow) and Kodi (end). The name
alludes to an anecdote in the Ramayana, where Lord Rama broke the bridge
constructed by his army of monkeys between the mainland and the island
of Lanka with a stroke of his bow. Barely 50 yards long, Dhanushkodi is
the sole terrestrial border between India and Sri Lanka. It was
inhabited until 1964, when a terrible cyclone wrecked the village and
swept a passenger train into the sea. Though Dhanushkodi today is a
ghost town, it is still visited by pilgrims. Yahoo! reader J MADHU
RANTHAKAN presents a photographic travelogue of a journey to land’s end.

pilgrimage site. Only a few, though, know the mythological and
historical importance of nearby Dhanushkodi.

Air India crisis continues, 14 flights cancelled
New Delhi/Mumbai, May 14 (IANS) The agitation by Air India pilots entered its seventh day Monday with the management cancelling 14 international outbound flights, also throwing domestic operationsinto disarray, an official said.
'We have cancelled around 14 flights for the day. The contingency plan will be implemented within two or three days whereby a guaranteed minimum international operations will be operated,' a senior Air India official with the Operations Arm told IANS.
'We are monitoring the situation and informing the passengers in advance.'
Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh had Sunday regretted the move by the government to merge the erstwhile Indian Airlines and Air India and had said there should have been due diligence.
Trouble started for the airline May 8 when pilots belonging to Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) took mass sick leave protesting the move to provide Boeing-787 Dreamliner training to pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines.

Air India sacks nine more pilots, eight flights cancelled
New Delhi/Mumbai, May 10 (IANS) The pilots' agitation in Air India continued for the third day Thursday forcing the management to cancel eight more international flights, stop bookings on some major long-haul routes for the next five days and sack nine more pilots.
'We had to cancel eight international flights from Delhi and Mumbai. Rest all international flights are operating per schedule,' a senior Air India official told IANS in New Delhi.
'We are using reserve pilots who are trained to operate Boeing 777 aircraft. Passengers are being updated about their flight status.'
The flights to and from the national capital to various international destinations like Chicago, Toronto, Shanghai, Paris and Frankfurt have been affected.
From Mumbai, two international operations to New Jersey and Riyadh were cancelled.
The flag carrier's international low-cost subsidiary Air India Express had also to cancel six flight operations to various destinations from south India to the Middle East.
The airline also announced that it has closed ticket bookings on ultra long-haul routes till May 15. Closure in ticket bookings will affect around 15 flights to West-bound destinations such as the US, Europe, and some other destinations like Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
'Currently we have deployed 777 aircraft on some of these routes. The pilots who are agitating have had adequate training on these aircraft. And if the stir continues we will have no option but to ground these aircraft,' sources in the airline said.
The airline has 17 aircraft of 777 type in the fleet. The airline also sacked nine more pilots Thursday who went on mass sick leave Tuesday.
'We have sacked nine more pilots. We are ready for talks, negotiations but we will also not tolerate this kind of illegal action which will permanently hurt the airline's image,' the airline official said.
The flag carrier had sacked 26 pilots on Wednesday and 10 pilots on Tuesday. Air India also derecognised their union - Indian Pilots Guild (IPG).
Trouble started for the airline when pilots belonging to IPG, of pre-merger Air India pilots, had gone on mass 'sick' leave protesting the move by the airline to provide Boeing-787 Dreamliner training to pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines.
The stir caused four international flight cancellations each on Tuesday and Wednesday. The airline added that it has also filed a contempt of court petition in the Delhi High Court against the pilots who were restrained by the Court not to go on a strike.
The airline had Wednesday moved the Delhi High Court, which restrained the pilots from going on strike, termed illegal by Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh.
While the IPG has said it is open to talks, the government has made it clear that there would be no negotiations till the pilots returned to work.
Air India is estimated to be suffering a loss of Rs.10 crore per day, besides loss in passenger goodwill and international image at the height of the holiday season.
